A lot of our customers over the last several years have been coming into the shop and looking a lot more at gravel bikes and asking questions about it. With the road conditions and the still maturing viewpoint of many Nebraska drivers of sharing the road with cyclists, it has become not only a more adventurous kind of riding but also a safer kind. 

Gravel riding in Nebraska during the spring can be a great experience with ice melting the gravel roads are usually dry and fast, making it a perfect time to ride your gravel bike.  The weather is usually mild with temperatures ranging from 40°F to 70°F during the day which makes is pretty comfortable to ride with the right gear.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the aspects you will need to consider when gravel riding here. This includes the type of clothing, equipment, and also some locations that are good to ride at here in our great state.

Clothing

When it comes to clothing, you should dress in layers so you can adjust your clothing as the temperature changes throughout the day. Here are some specific items of clothing that you should consider:

1. Cycling shorts - A good pair of cycling shorts with a chamois will help keep you comfortable during long rides. Look for shorts that are made from moisture-wicking fabric to keep you dry.

2. Cycling jersey - A cycling jersey is designed to be lightweight and breathable, making it perfect for warm weather riding. Look for a jersey with a full-length zipper so you can adjust your ventilation as needed.

3. Arm warmers - Arm warmers are a great way to add warmth without adding bulk. They can easily be removed and stored in your jersey pocket if you get too warm.

4. Leg warmers - Leg warmers are similar to arm warmers but are designed for your legs. They can easily be removed and stored in your jersey pocket if you get too warm.

5. Windbreaker jacket - A windbreaker jacket is a great way to add an extra layer of protection against the wind. Look for a jacket that is lightweight and packable so you can easily store it in your jersey pocket.

6. Gloves - Gloves are essential for protecting your hands from the elements and from road vibration. Look for gloves that are padded and have a good grip.

7. Sunglasses - Sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes from the sun and from debris on the road. Look for sunglasses with polarized lenses to reduce glare.

8. Cycling socks - Cycling socks are designed to be lightweight and breathable, making them perfect for warm weather riding. Look for socks that are made from moisture-wicking fabric to keep your feet dry.

9. Cycling shoes - A good pair of cycling shoes with stiff soles will help you transfer power to the pedals more efficiently. Look for shoes that are comfortable and have good ventilation.

Equipment

Safety is always a concern when riding on gravel roads. You should always wear a helmet and use lights if you are riding at night. You should also carry a first aid kit and know how to use it in case of an emergency. As fun as gravel riding is, it also carries some risk due to uneven surfaces and loose gravel.:

1. Gravel bike - A gravel bike is perfect for this type of riding because it has wider tires that provide more traction and stability on gravel roads. It also has a more relaxed geometry that makes it more comfortable for long rides.

2. Helmet - You should always wear a helmet to protect your head in case of a fall. Look for a helmet that is comfortable and has good ventilation.

3. Hydration pack or water bottles - Hydration is essential when riding long distances in warm weather. Look for a hydration pack or water bottles that are easy to use and easy to clean.

4. Bike computer or GPS device - A bike computer or GPS device can help you track your progress and navigate unfamiliar roads.

5. Saddlebag or frame bag - A saddlebag or frame bag is a great way to carry extra gear such as spare tubes, tools, and snacks.

6. Lights - If you plan on riding at night, you should use lights to make yourself more visible to motorists.

7. First aid kit - You should always carry a first aid kit and know how to use it in case of an emergency.

Locations

And contrary to popular belief to us folks who don’t get out of Omaha very often, Nebraska has some beautiful vistas, from rolling prairies to majestic bluffs. Here are four different locations in different parts of Nebraska that are good to visit for gravel riding:

1. The Sandhills - This area is in north-central Nebraska and is known for its rolling hills and beautiful scenery.

2. The Niobrara River Valley - This area is in north-eastern Nebraska and is known for its rugged terrain and scenic views.

3. The Loess Hills - This area is in western Iowa but is close enough to Nebraska that it's worth mentioning. The Loess Hills are known for their steep hills and beautiful views.

4. The Platte River Valley - This area is in central Nebraska and is known for its flat terrain and scenic views.
